The Department of Geography and the Sussex Centre for Migration Research
(SCMR) in collaboration with Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) and
Brighton & Hove City Teaching Primary Care Trust (BHCTPCT) invite
applications from outstanding postgraduate students for an ESRC
Collaborative CASE studentship to investigate issues of health provision
for migrant populations in the City of Brighton and Hove. CASE studentships
differ from standard PhD grants in offering students the opportunity for
practical experience through collaboration with the non-academic partners,
in this case BHCC and BHCTPCT.
This research will contribute to knowledge of migrant groups in Brighton
and Hove who encompass a wide variety of origins, migration histories and
experiences in the UK. We are keen that this research develops strong
participatory methods involving regular and sustained contact with local
migrant and community groups, from the first year of the award. The
research will explore a potentially wide ranging set of issues with a
variety of quantitative and qualitative methods. Research will focus on
health needs, access to health and perceptions and implications of good or
poor health amongst migrant groups. It is hoped that the research will have
a positive impact on health services in the city. Within this framework
there is considerable flexibility for the successful candidate to influence
the shape of the research in line with his or her interests and expertise.
The studentship will start on October 1st 2008. It will cover tuition fees
(at the EU rate) for a DPhil at the University of Sussex plus an annual
stipend of £14,300. The award may be either under the ESRC '+3' scheme,
which lasts three years and requires candidates to already hold an ESRC
approved research training qualification, or the '1+3' scheme, lasting a
year longer and including a one year MSc in Social Research Methods, for
those without a research training qualification. In addition, candidates
must have at least a 2.1 or the equivalent in an undergraduate degree in
any social science discipline and they must be officially resident in the
UK. Candidates should also have a demonstrable interest in working with
migrants, refugees and/or in the health sector that will ideally include
experience in one of these fields. We are looking for someone who will be
able to engage with local migrant communities and, in addition to
conducting excellent research, will help to develop existing links between
the University, BHCC and BHCTPCT for the mutual benefit of the University
and local communities.
Please send a full CV and a covering letter stating why you are interested
in the studentship and detailing any relevant experience to Julie Carr
([log in to unmask]). The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday
20th June. Shortlisted candidates should be available for interview on
Friday 4th July. If you have any questions concerning this studentship
please contact Dr Michael Collyer on [log in to unmask]
