Bangor University
Welsh Medium Postgraduate Scholarship: Film Studies
School of Creative Studies and Media
The School of Creative Studies and Media is offering a Welsh medium
postgraduate scholarship in Film Studies, sponsored by the Higher
Education Funding Council for Wales, to commence on 1st October 2008.
Funding is available for three years as a doctoral research student,
with an additional introductory year as a Master’s student if required,
and another final year as a teaching fellow. The postgraduate
scholarship will cover the cost of university tuition fees (at the
Home/EU rate of £3,300 for 2008/9) and will provide a maintenance grant
of £12,600 per year (with a further increase pending).
Applications are invited from potential researchers in any field of Film
Studies. The successful candidate will also be required to undertake
some Welsh medium teaching for the School as a condition of the award.
The School of Creative Studies and Media is part of the University’s
College of Arts and Humanities. It offers degrees across the whole
spectrum of creative arts including film, media, creative writing,
journalism and performance arts.
Set in the dramatic scenery between Snowdonia and the sea we offer
students interested in the Creative Arts and Industries a wide range of
courses, both practical and theoretical, that encourage students to
learn, grown and explore the creative world.
Here at the School of Creative Studies and Media we aim to provide
excellence in university education in all aspects of creative arts and
industries. Our staff include acclaimed creative and critical
practitioners, writers, dramatists, film makers, journalists and new
media experts.
The successful applicant will:
• Have achieved at least an upper second-class honours degree and/or a
postgraduate qualification in a relevant field. The individual must be a
graduate of a recognised institution of higher education or an
undergraduate expecting to graduate before 31 July 2008. Other
qualifications may be considered only exceptionally.
• Be a fluent Welsh speaker, although the scholarship holder can
undertake further training to improve their competence to teach through
the medium of Welsh. The Scheme gives every support to the holder to
undertake research and present a thesis through the medium of Welsh, but
this is not a requirement at present.
• Demonstrate the capability and diligence required to complete a PhD by
research within the period of the award.
• Provide a clear statement of the proposed research topic in the field
of Film Studies; s/he will be expected to offer an outline of the
questions or problems to be addressed and of the methods to be used in
the thesis.
• Be in a position to undertake Welsh medium teaching duties for the
School from the second year onwards. During the additional year, which
will take the form of a fellowship, the successful candidate will be
required to develop new provision as well as continuing the minimum five
hours of teaching expected after the first year.
Applicants should complete and return the following form to Dr. Nathan
Abrams, Director of Graduate Studies, School of Creative Studies and
