I have a remit to help implement our Library's Internationalisation
Strategy. As a part of this we considered producing posters, and
educational material in other languages, and also signage using
symbols/icons.
When I consulted with colleagues I was advised that as international
students often come to this country to improve their English, it would
be better to concentrate our efforts on ensuring that our material is
written using plain English. So, a number of years ago we invited the
Plain English Campaign http://www.plainenglish.co.uk/ to deliver a staff
training session. We found this really useful and have worked since
then to implement their recommendations. These recommendations help us
make our documents clear, comprehensible and concise. We think that
this form of communication benefits both the home and the international
students.
We do have a welcome sign in multiple languages. I have found from
experience that this is a challenge to maintain: in the effort to be
inclusive we are always adding another language!

At the moment we are in the process of investigating whether or not our
library handouts should be duplicated in different languages for the
ESOL students. We have hit a bit of a barrier in terms of finding
someone who will carry out the translation at a reasonable cost.
Would it be possible for you to let me know if any of your library
guides are produced in other languages and if so how you did it?
