THE NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC LIBRARY, SOUTHAMPTON

Time: 2.15pm (for 2.30pm start) to 4.30pm
The National Oceanographic Library is a national resource for the UK marine science community and plays a full part in supporting the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) research strategy. The Library provides resources and information to staff and students at the National Oceanography Centre including the School of Ocean and Earth Science and the University of Southampton as a whole. It is one of the six sites of the University of Southampton library system. The Marine Information and Advisory Service (MIAS) is available to all external users of the Centre and is based in the Library.
The guided tour will be of the Library and facilities, and the comprehensive special collections from the mid-19th century, which include books, reports, monographs, journals, conference proceedings, atlases and charts. There will be an opportunity to network over refreshments, overlooking the scenic Southampton Water.
Who is this for? Those preparing for Chartership, Revalidation or Certification, can add reflections on this visit to their portfolio. Also ideal for anyone simply wishing to look at the facilities and resources which this presigious library offers.

Programme:
2.15pm Meet at Reception in the Main Building, to be collected by a staff member of NOCS.
2.30 - 2.45pm Welcome, Introduction & History of the Centre: Jane Stephenson, Head of Information Services
Groups will then subdivide and two tours will run. After the break, the groups will swap and have the other tour.
Tour 1: Library: Karen Rolfe, Assistant Librarian - User Services
Tour 2: Special Collections and items from the Archives: Adrian Burkett, Library Assistant
2.45 - 3.15pm Guided tour (1 & 2)
3.15 - 3.45pm An opportunity to network over refreshments, for purchase at the cafeteria
3.45 - 4.15pm Guided tour (1 & 2)
4.15 - 4.30pm Groups reconvene
4.30pm Close

Entry to the Library is via the NOCS main building reception which has a level access with automatic (large) rotary doors (which have a control for wheel chair users). NOL is located within the NOCS building on level 4 and is accessible by lift. The library has automatic doors. The library is on two floors with a lift between the floors. Adapted toilets are available in the building. Assistance dogs are welcome.

As you come to the Centre you will pass through Dock Gate 4 Security Control. If asked by the Port Security staff please let them know that you are visiting the Centre to come to the Library.
If travelling by the Uni-Link Bus service (U1C Dock Gate 4) the driver will usually announce at the last stop before Dock Gate 4 that people with business at the NOCS should remain on the bus, which will then come directly to the bus stop at the Centre.
