Dear colleagues,
Could I ask you to bring this Summer Internship opportunity to the
attention of any senior undergraduate (3rd or 4th year) who may be
interested in spending 10 weeks in Dublin this summer.
Many thanks,
Alan
*A 10-week summer internship at Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies:
seismic study of the deep structure of Western North America.*
The spectacular topography of the Western North America has formed due
to powerful forces acting deep within the Earth. On the geological
timescale, the crust and mantle beneath this region deform and flow
rapidly. Our understanding of these movements, however, is still very
incomplete.
In this project, deep structure of the region will be investigated with
new seismic imaging methods applied to broadband seismic data, primarily
from California. The intern will retrieve the data from data centres
over the Internet and use automated and interactive tools (software in
MATLAB, FORTRAN, UNIX shell) for processing and inversion of the data.
This work should produce new insight into Earth structure and dynamics
beneath California.
The work will be performed at the Geophysics Section of the School of
Cosmic Physics, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (5 Merrion Sq.,
Dublin). The net pay will be EUR3,460 for the 10-week period.
