Dear Friends,
Helsinki Citizens' Assembly - Turkey has just published a report on the
detention of refugees in Turkey, entilted Unwelcome Guests: The Detention
of Refugees in Turkey’s ‘Foreigners Guesthouses.’ Many of you may have
seen it already, but for those who have not, it is available online at
http://www.hyd.org.tr/?pid=609. The Turkish version is available at
http://www.hyd.org.tr/?pid=607.
The report is based on interviews held between October 2006 and September
2007 with 40 refugees from 17 different countries who had been detained in
seven “foreigners’ guesthouses” in Turkey. As the report discusses,
refugees held in these detention facilities often lack access to key
procedural rights and endure substandard conditions.
We look forward to you feedback about the report. Feel free to forward it
along to your colleagues.
All the best,
Veysel Essiz
