One from the Road
Laying down a purely unintentional smog,
we went about our daily tasks. Hugging
the side of the road to avoid oncoming traffic,
checking the rearview mirror so as to see what's
coming up behind us, keeping our eyes on the gas
tank gauge to make sure we don't run out and get
stranded. In a breakfast joint a daughter (very
young) and mother are having a chat. The girl
has more to say, it seems. Asks Mom to play
a game--spelling "friend" backwards. Kid wins, but
forgets that the i-before-e rule runs backward too.
