medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you're interested in, but I just
ran across it today. Around 1250, the University of Oxford issued a statute
forbidding masters and students from celebrating 'national festivals'
(festum nationis) in churches. Under pain of greater excommunication, they
were not to dance in churches or in the porches of churches, wearing masks,
garlands of leaves and flowers, or other materials on their heads.
The reference is in H. Anstey, _Munimenta Academica_ (Rolls Series 50),
1:18.
