Just returned from Florence where James Bradburne (a fellow in our
lab) has implemented a very nice bluetooth tour at Palazzo Strozzi,
where he doubles as director. Following the instructions I was able
to connect to the BT server, download a small app containing exhibit
text, and at each point download an audio file. It was simple and
well executed - done with Vodafone.
This kind of effort involves massive assumptions however - that
visitors will have BT enabled or know how to turn it on, download
files, etc. So really only for those who are pretty tech savvy. At
the other end of the spectrum, I did a dead-simple one in which
visitors just phone up a local number - a kind of exhibit voicemail
system, but also allows for visitor feedback (leaving messages).
