Hello all
Thank you to the 19 people who responded to my question about borrowing
in FE libraries. The wholly unscientific results are below.
One HE and 18 FE librarians responded.
12 said that borrowing had decreased in their institution.
The factors affecting this included use of the internet and e-resources
as opposed to more traditional print-based materials. In two cases
people said that borrowing was down but headcounts were up - this
certainly our experience, where usage of the LRC has increased 20% but
borrowing is down 6%.
In two cases borrowing had remained static.
Five said borrowing had increased.
The reasons behind rises included recent investment in new stock,
marketing of LRC resources, and changes to borrowing regulations.
It was suggested by several respondents that borrowing is no longer a
representative measure of library activity. Instead, measures such as
headcounts and customer opinion provide a more meaningful picture of LRC
activities and impact.
Hope this is of interest to you!

Subject: Borrowing - question for FE colleagues
Hello all
Student borrowing from our College LRC has dropped year-on-year. Is
anyone else working in FE experiencing the same thing?
I'd be really grateful if any general FE college Library/LRC people
would email me with a yes or no! I need some evidence for self
assessment purposes so I can judge whether this is a national trend.
I'll treat your responses in confidence. The information will be really
useful, so I hope you can help.
Thanks! Hope the sun is shining on you like it is here on the Island.
