Conflict and Dissonance: Violence, Culture and Interpretation
Friday 16 May (0900–1900)
Location: Room 5, Modern Languages Building, University Gardens, University
of Glasgow
Description
Assertions of cultural difference and identity or the tensions latent within
such assertions have been a productive field of investigation in a range of
disciplines, whether in terms of cultural studies and cultural theory.
(Obvious notable figures here include Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Terry
Eagleton, Michel Foucault, Slavoj Þiþek.) This informal conference will
consider questions of conflict and dissonance in any context within the
field of Modern Language studies. The aim is to promote cross-period and
cross-cultural dialogue. Among the possible themes are:
• aesthetic violence: authors and authority / adaptation and reworking
• gendered violences
• identity formation, repression
• modernity and its discontents
• social history
• clash of cultures
• the anthropology of emotions
• problems of form and genre
• translation and adaptation
• intercultural studies and the problems of globalisation
• memory, repression and disavowal
Although the theme is violence, we are hoping that the day will not be a
neo-brutalist document of barbarism, but rather provide a friendly and
supportive forum for dialogue and exchange. Accordingly, panels will be made
up of a mix of staff and postgraduates.
PGR students with papers or material in preparation in these or related
areas who would like to give papers or presentations on work in progress
(duration: 20-25 mins approx.) should send abstracts to Eilidh MacDonald
([log in to unmask]) by 1700 on Friday, April 25th at the very
latest, although preferably sooner.
Conference fee: £12-00
Graduate students – a number of bursaries giving reimbursement of travel
expenses for up to £25-00 are available for student participants arriving
from outwith Glasgow.
