A 3 years Ph. D. position is available within the Marie-Curie Initial Training Network (ITN)
FASTQUAST “Ultrafast control of quantum systems by strong laser fields” funded by the European
Commission. The research is in the area of laser-induced molecular alignment.
For the last few years, our group has been studying the alignment of molecules induced by short
laser pulses. The techniques that we have developed to detect and characterize molecular
alignment rest upon the change of the optical properties of the medium when molecules are
aligned. Using these non-intrusive techniques, we have investigated different strategies to
produce and control the alignment of linear and non-linear molecules. The present position aims
at investigating molecular orientation as well as to explore new effects related to the alignment of
molecules in contact with some environment.
The experimental project will be performed in the following topics:
- Strategies for observation of field-free molecular orientation
- Modelling and controlling decoherence and dissipation: Laser-controlled molecular processes in
contact with an environment
The laboratory is very well equipped for these projects. The apparatus available includes two
amplified Ti:Sa mode locked laser (100 fs, 100 Hz and 1 KHz), a short-pulse (30 fs) non-collinear
optical parametric amplifier (NOPA) tunable between 500 nm and 700 nm, pulse shaper apparatus,
devices for short pulse characterization (SPIDER and single-shot autocorrelator), supersonic free
jets. A full range of vacuum, diagnostic and detection apparatus are also available.
The position will suit candidates who have a background in one or (preferably) more of the
following areas: ultrafast laser spectroscopy, femtosecond laser techniques, ultrafast non-linear
optics, wave-packets dynamics, pulse shaping and characterization of ultrashort laser pulses.
