Pierre is probably right for the wrong reasons. The real drawback to PDF is
that it is a proprietary format - although there are moves towards making it
an ISO standard. It is a development of PostScript, some elements of which
are incorporated, so it is really a typesetting format. I think the
compression issue is a red herring, as it is not an essential feature. PDF
can also incorporate unpleasant 'security' features - including the ability
to 'phone home'.
