Diana,
Whenever I acquire a new copy of an article I add it to my bibliography of xeroxes, which is a
simple Word file with full bibliographical references to each article in alphabetical order.
Where appropriate, I add key words to the entry, so that, when I'm searching for a particular
subject, it is easy to search the file. It is a simple system, but I can easily do author
searches, as well as subject and keyword searches. It takes a bit of time to get such a
system started, but if one keeps it up to date, it is extremely useful. My Word file containing
entries for all my articles on file is now up to 76 pages long! I also try to story the articles in
alphabetical order, although this takes occasional shifting of articles between drawers, as
more get added. I find it helps to put each article in a separate file folder marked with
author's name and title. Of course, this takes storage space, but fortunately I've got a
basement, and occasionally my university sells off old file cabinets, which can be picked up
fairly cheaply. Alternately, a friend of mine, rather than storing her articles alphabetically,
simply places them in boxes as she acquires them. The boxes are all lettered, with the
articles within the box numbered in order, for easy finding (not unlike Robert Cotton's
pressmark system). Thus, each article has a code such as "A-8", for Box A, 8th article from
the front. Perhaps this is excessive, but both systems work. I still have articles I photocopied
as an undergraduate and can find them in a flash.
Cheers,
