Dear all
A word from the list-owners ...
Lesley and I have been working on some more in-depth guidance relating
to lis-e-journals and postings to the list, and thought it would be
useful to share it with everyone.
Good practice
* Positives as well as negatives! We know there are lots of
issues with e-resource provision, but there are also excellent
initiatives and projects going on. So let's hear about them.
* Keeping a professional tone. We have a diverse membership
from all levels of the library, intermediary and publisher world, and we
can only benefit from sharing our knowledge and opinions in a
non-inflammatory manner. Although the list is not moderated as such, we
will step in if we feel discussions are getting out of hand.
* Keeping post length as short as possible, and relevant to the
aims of the list - to discuss all elements of e-resource management and
practice.
* If something is for one person only, post to them and not to
the entire list. However summaries of responses received are encouraged
if off-list respondents are in agreement.
* Contribute - don't feel your views will not be relevant. This
particularly applies to our large non-UK membership who may feel the
list is too biased towards UK practice, and to intermediary and
publisher members. All knowledge and discussion is useful.
* Sharing news and views on the wider implications of resources
either directly related to, or peripheral to, e-resource management.
For example Open Access, Institutional Research Repositories,
digitisation ...
Not-so-good practice
* Using the list as a marketing outlet. By all means share
information on your companies, products, and appointments, but don't use
the list as a place to air your press releases, or for items not
directly of relevance to e-resource practice. Make sure the important
information gets to the list without getting lost in lengthy postings
full of soundbites. Lis-e-journal should not be an outlet for
self-promotion and advertising!
* Naming and shaming without good cause. Use examples to back
up your concerns and try and resolve issues with the
provider/agent/library directly first. It is perfectly acceptable to
use the list if all other avenues have been exhausted.
* Forgetting that there is a bigger picture out there which
affects e-resources. It is easy to focus on the nitty-gritty but
sometimes it is good to step back and take a look around.
* Posting without due consideration for the membership.
* Quoting an entire post by someone else when commenting on it.
Quote selectively and try to avoid one-liner responses.
* No discussion of commercially-sensitive information (such as
pricing) please.
Finally, thank you for remaining a member of this list. Your support
(and hopefully your participation) is much appreciated.
