Jackie
I read your email with interest.
Here at St Andrews we have developed a CRIS (Research Expertise Database)
in-house which links directly to our dSpace Digital Research Repository.
Metadata for publications can be entered manually or imported from various 3rd
party formats. It also has live links to the central Student Record system for
supervised students and the Research Grants system (both via password
protection!).
It started off in 2002 as a standalone database with manual (cut & paste!) input
and then progressed on-line once the RAE became an issue and Senior Management
realised they needed such a system, both for RAE and beyond.
We are in the process of (re-)encouraging (!) academics to keep their profiles
up to date, now that RAE is over .. but Schools are definitely seeing the
benefits in having a central database e.g. for publications and esteem that
they can re-skin for their own web pages. Also, with Open Access rising up the
agenda the fact that the academic just needs to enter metadata in one place is
a great selling point!
The main public view of the database is available at
http://portal.st-andrews.ac.uk/research-expertise/
You may be interested in the upcoming EuroCRIS conference in Maribor, Slovenia
in June ... see www.cris2008.org for more details.
All the best
