In EPrints, authors, editors and contributors are a compound of
i) family name
ii) given names/initials
iii) honorific
iv) patronage
v) id
so when entering the author "Dr Leslie A. Carr III", a depositor might
actually fill out five separate subfields "Carr", "Leslie A.", "Dr", "III",
"[log in to unmask]". In fact, most eprints installations are configured
to hide honorific and patronage, so there would only be three subfields per
author.
The last subfield, the id, is there precisely to identify the author
uniquely, whether the name appears as "Leslie Carr", "Les Carr", "L Carr",
"L. A. Carr" or "Dr Carr". Despite the fact that in eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk
there are in fact thirteen different ways that my name has been spelled in
162 different records, all of those records are identified as belonging to
me. That in turn means that when the School portal tries to list all my
publications to appear net to all my grants and all my teaching
responsibilities, it is not dependent on everyone having spelled my name
the right way.
It is of course dependent on people adding my email address correctly, but
that can be provided by an "autocompletor" (as of course, can the name in
the first place).
Does that help?
