Conference on the Role and Works of Piero Gazzola (1908-1979)
Verona, November 28-29, 2008

Piero Gazzola, an Architectural Heritage Strategy in the Second Half of
the Twentieth
Century.
Knowledge, Protection and Promotion in Italy and Abroad.

Call for papers

The conference in Verona will be an opportunity to provide a
historical context
with renewed critical and documentary evidence on the role
played  by  Gazzola,  to
focus on research produced and to have the most updated and
complete  profile
possible of Gazzola. Along with analysis of important national and
international events,
and the review of regulations and charters of restoration, it is
necessary  to  reconsider
his works as the result of a public bureaucrat involved in daily
heritage management; it
is here that Gazzola's "experimental" side regarding preservation
and  guardianship
comes out.
 One of the main objectives of the conference is to bring
together  historical
research produced to the date, fostering dialogue between
researchers  and  real
witnesses from the era. Research thus far carried out has drawn on the
wealth of Piero
Gazzola's archives and library which have been preserved by Pia
and  Gianandrea
Gazzola, President and Advisor to the Piero Gazzola Archive
Association,  however
there is still much ground left uncovered.
It is also for this reason that a call for papers is being announced: to
investigate
the main aspects of the Gazzola's roles and works, as well
as  other  important
personages, works, events and themes in some way related to
his  wide-ranging
activity. To this end, and together with the major contributions
focusing Gazzola, work
on public figures and case studies linked to Gazzola may be proposed,
and papers will
be considered from different areas dealing with similar
situations  where  the
experiences, theoretical context and working methods are
analogous  to  those  of
Gazzola. We are looking for contributions and research on monument site
complexes
and urban realities that are directly or indirectly pertinent,
and that refer to the years
between the war and the seventies; this may include studies on
related  bureaucrats,
architects, researchers and cultural representatives, where there is a
demonstrable and
fertile working relationship with Gazzola and interested parties from
the period.

The call for papers relates to the main themes of the conference as
follows:

* The importance of the Milan cultural milieu on his training and his
intellectual
technical activity (in a professional and academic context);
* Post-war preservation strategies for monuments (documentary
campaign  for
reconstruction, "passive protection");
* Definition of methods and theoretical output on architectural
restoration  (in
single works and drafting of guidelines);
* Inventory and guardianship of historical centres and the
landscape  (analysis
instruments, active conservation measures, restriction policies);
* The role of cultural promoter, at the national and international
levels  (contact
networks with associations and cultural organizations, organizer/curator
of congresses
and journals)
* Reclaiming cultural heritage and museums (organization of shows
and
collections, museum projects);
* Scientific/Educational activity (teaching of restoration and
history  of
architecture, monument research, training of restoration architects).

Proposed abstracts (2000 keystrokes) must be sent via email to:
[log in to unmask]
no later than May 23, 2008.

Approvals will be sent out starting starting in the middle of
June  2008,  and  a
draft of the conference programme will first be issued at the
beginning  of  October
2008. The conference's proceedings will be published. Papers may
be  presented  in
any of the official languages of the conference: Italian and
English  (simultaneous
translations will be provided).
