Systematic review of diagnostic studies in primary care
2pm JONATHAN STERNE (Bristol University)
Systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy studies
There is growing recognition of the need to improve the evidence base
for the accuracy of diagnostic tests, and the Cochrane Collaboration has
now begun to include systematic reviews of diagnostic test accuracy. I
will summarise some of the issues, difficulties and sources of bias in
such reviews, and discuss the role of meta-analysis.
2.25pm ROGER HARBORD (Bristol University)
Meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy
Several features of diagnostic test accuracy studies make meta-analysis
more complex than for controlled trials, and many different methods of
meta-analysis have been proposed. I will explore the options and explain
the rationale behind recommendations to use relatively sophisticated
methods made recently in the Cochrane Diagnostic Reviewers' Handbook.
2.50pm DANIELLE VAN DER WINDT (Keele University and EMGO Institute,
Amsterdam)
Physical examination for diagnosing disc herniation in patients with
back pain: a systematic review of diagnostic accuracy studies
The design and results of one of the Cochrane pilot reviews of
diagnostic accuracy studies will be presented. The aim of this review is
to summarize information on the diagnostic performance of tests carried
out during physical examination in identifying disc herniation in
patients with back pain. Specific attention will be given to problems
encountered during study selection, quality assessment, data extraction
and synthesis.
