Methodological Developments to the General Household Survey
Liam Murray (ONS), Mohammed Yar (ONS) and Jo Wathan (Manchester University)
The General Household Survey (GHS) has recently been redesigned to
accommodate new EU data requirements. The EU has set itself the strategic
goal of 'fighting poverty and social exclusion'. A key requirement of this
is the collection of EU-wide data on income and living conditions, which are
used to assess and monitor progress towards the goal. Member states are
asked to provide both cross-sectional and longitudinal data, and measures of
poverty and social exclusion.
Liam Murray will outline how the Office for National Statistics redesigned
the GHS in order to meet the EU-SILC data requirements. An overview of the
new survey design and changes in the content of the survey will be
described. Mohammed Yar will focus on the European use and dissemination of
EU-SILC data. Poverty indicators, and how these are used to make comparisons
within and between countries, and over time, will be discussed. Jo Wathan
will act as discussant.
Rosalyn Harper will chair the seminar. Attendance is free but
pre-registration is recommended. You can register by email:
[log in to unmask] or by phone (020) 7638 8998. For a map and directions
see www.rss.org.uk/findus. We anticipate the seminar will finish at around
6pm. For further information contact Rosalyn Harper on
