Qualitative Researcher Sought for ESRC project ‘Behind Closed Doors: Older
Couples and the Management of Household Money'.
We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher with relevant qualitative
research experience to join our 2-year research programme funded by the
Economic and Social Research Council investigating how older couples view,
manage and negotiate about money. The project aims to advance our
understanding of social life in a number of spheres including how the
lifecourse and the ageing process influence well being in later life, how
household resources are shared and managed by older couples, how and why
financial resources flow between generations, and the impact of government
policies on individuals within older households in the realms of social
security, savings, debt and pensions.
You will be responsible for recruiting older couples in London for in-depth
interviews, jointly interviewing couples with another researcher, analysing
the results using NVivo and contributing to writing and theoretical
development in the field. You will contribute to the thinking and
development of other areas of the project including quantitative analysis
and policy analysis, as well as the development of an innovative website.
You will hold a higher degree in a social science or related discipline,
preferably a PhD; otherwise an MA or MSc coupled with substantive experience
of qualitative social research. As well as having a sound knowledge and
understanding of qualitative research methods and analysis, you must have a
demonstrable research interest in at least one of project's substantive
research areas - gender, ethnicity, the sociology of money or the well-being
of older people. Experience of interviewing older people would be an advantage.
The post will be available from 1 June 2008 to 3 February 2010.
For an informal discussion of the post please contact Dr Debora Price:
