I declined a chance to hear Li-Young Lee at the Library of Congress February 7, 2008, billed with
David Kirby in a reading curated by Charles Simic. No one has ever recommended his work to me
and I can't abide his advocate, Gerald Stern. However, reading around in the results of a Google
search on Li-Young Lee yielded up the startling information that Lee's first book of poems,
published by A. Poulin's BOA Editions in Brockport NY during 1986, has sold 80,000 copies. I've
been speculating on how this could have occurred. He's apparently a very good public reader, but
still . . .
