It's interesting who hated whom when it came to slang in the 19thC.
Doctor William Maginn disliked (to say the least) Grantley Berkely -- but
then, as someone else on this list once remarked, not even Grantley
Berkely's mother could love him.
Surprise, surprise ...
Maginn approved of Ainsworth (Rookwood and Jack Sheppard) but not Bulwer
Lytton.
Bulwer Lytton (Pelham) couldn't work out why no one loved him.
Dickuns in _Oliver Twist_ went where the money was (as Willie Sutton once
perceptively remarked, when asked why he robbed banks).
Odd that, but.
