OR50, the Annual Conference of the UK Operational Research Society, will take place at the University of York, UK from September 9th to 11th, 2008
Communicating OR is a new stream for 2008, providing an opportunity to highlight the contribution that different communication approaches make to the successful development and implementation of OR practices.
The keynote speaker for the stream will be Professor Oleg Liber, Director of JISC CETIS and Director of the Institute for Educational Cybernetics at the University of Bolton. His presentation will describe his work promoting the Viable System Model (devised by Stafford Beer, a past president of the OR society) to develop an understanding of the role of educational technology in guiding technology development and implementation. This has been explicitly used in two major contributions in JISC developments.
Presentations for this stream are encouraged from OR practitioners, e.g. academics, practitioners, consultants and others, across a range of topic areas providing case study examples and lessons learned from:-
* Successful and/or unsuccessful communication approaches, whether straight forward or complex;
* The effective communication of OR to a non-specialist audience;
* The challenge of language and approach in communicating OR practices;
* The use of innovative technologies in OR implementations.
