medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Emilia Jamroziak <[log in to unmask]>
> Does anybody know about any work that would discuss Cistercians who became
bishops in the 13th century? There is a very good book by Martha Newman on
that theme (and more) in the 12th c, and an article by Brian McGuire, but I
cannot locate any discussion on the situation in the following century.
> Any suggestions?
well, it's hardly a Pied de Terre, but this at least gets you something of a
ToeHold in c. 13:
Lipkin, Joel “The Entrance of the Cistercians into the Church Hierarchy,
1098-1227: The Bernardine Influence,” in _The Chimaera of His Age: Studies
on Bernard of Clairvaux_ (Studies in Medieval Cistercian History 5), edd. E.
Rozanne Elder and John R. Sommerfeldt (Kalamazoo: Cistercian Publications,
1980), pp. 62-75.
i haven't had a chance to read this yet, but it looks like it's purely a
statistical study and doesn't go into any details.
for instance, his graph of Number of Bishops vs. Years ("Figure One") shows a
peak reached about the time of Bernie's death, a decline in what looks like
the 1160s, a gradual increase from the 70s or so, reaching a larger series of
peaks in the early 13th c., then another decline...
it looks like his work is based on
Dominicus Willi, _Papste, Kardinale und Bishofe aus dem Cistercienser-Orden_,
Bregenz, 1912
and the volumes in the _Papstlichen Legatem_ series for various countries and
periods.
so, get ahold of the Willi and you'd be Home Free, at least in terms of a list
of names.
i will be trying to OCR Lipkin Monday and could send you (or anyone else) a
copy in a WORD file.
