Temporary Co-ordinator/Researcher for Pathfinder Project, Centre for Gender
Studies, SOAS

The School’s Centre for Gender Studies has secured a Pathfinder University
Grant from the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA). The Council
has a long history of assisting both refugee academics within the UK as well
as academics at risk in their country of origin. The SOAS Pathfinder Project
aims to tackle the particular challenges and needs of female academic
refugees. Given the fact that female academic refugees tend to suffer from
double marginalization – both as women and as refugees - SOAS is aiming to
establish a special programme that will 1) provide direct practical
assistance, mentoring and skill development for 3-4 female academic refugees
every year; and 2) develop a resource and educational package for other
universities around the UK to highlight the specific needs of female
academic refugees.

In the context of this project and under the line management of Dr Nadje
Al-Ali, we seek to employ a temporary coordinator/researcher to a 4 month
position (1 May- 31 August 2008) at point 6 on the researcher scale (£24,299
plus LWA) in order to:

1) research the specific needs of female academic refugees across the UK
(this will involve both a literature review as well as empirical research
across the UK)

2) co-ordinate and build networks across the School to identify
potential mentors and programmes for female academic refugees

3) engage in fundraising to assure the sustainability of the project

The applicant should hold an MA or PhD in a relevant subject and have
experience with both qualitative research and fundraising.

For further information, contact Dr Nadje Al-Ali, Centre for Gender Studies,

Please apply with a CV and a one-page personal statement in support of your
application by 15 April to [log in to unmask]
