Intersections of Gender, Class and Work
Post-graduate One Day Seminar Event
Newcastle University UK, 12th May 2008
We invite you to attend a one day seminar event to be held at Newcastle University this May which will explore intersecting gender, class and work identities and the ways in which they respond to and effect economic and social change, both materially and subjectively.
We are looking to provide a forum to engage with current debates and theories, focusing discussion around the concept of inter-sectionality (theorising one identity such as gender by exploring its intersections with class, race, gender, age, sexuality, disability etc) and how this might influence how we do feminist research in practice.
The aim of this one-day event is to provide a friendly environment for the cross-fertilisation of ideas across institutions and between research clusters. This seminar will be inter-disciplinary and broad in its focus. The day will include paper, poster and video presentations as well as an opportunity to discuss and debate the issues of the day. Sessions will be chaired by Professor Nina Laurie, Dr Helen Jarvis, Dr Alison Stenning and Dr Yvette Taylor.
We still welcome poster presentations from MA and PhD students on the following themes:
o intersections of work, class and gender
o changing gender relations at work and in the home
o space, place and the shaping of identities
o ethnicity and gender
o gendered work identities and practices
o commodification of emotional and aesthetic labour
o methodological implications of inter-sectionality
Admission is free and lunch will be provided. If you would like to attend the event can you please email to [log in to unmask] for a registration form, which should be returned to [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> by 14th April 2008.
