Hi Otto
There are two records in the ABCD for S. alba from Roman Britain:
(i) Reid C. 1901-03, 05-08. [Plant remains] Passim. and [Mr Boodle] 1909.
p. 477. In: (Fox G E and) St John Hope W H. 1901-1908. Excavations on the
site of the Roman city of Silchester, Hants in 1900-08. Archaeologia.
57-61. Various pp. [reported as Brassica alba; I can check the specific
report in which it appears, though there probably won't be much
'contextual' information for such an early record, and the dating won;t be
better than 'Roman'.
(ii) Willcox G H. 1978. Seeds from the late 2nd century pit F28. 411-4, and
Table 5. In: Dennis G. 1978. 1-7 St Thomas Street. 291-422. In: Southwark
Excavations 1972-72. London, Middlesex and Surrey Archaeol. Socs. Joint
Publication 1.
I can send a scanned copy of the relevant pages of both of these if it
would help.
Marijke may well have found other records during the work she and her
students did for the paper they published in Britannia recently:
van der Veen M., Livarda A and Hill A. 2007. The archaeobotany of Roman
Britain: current state and identification of research priorities. Britannia
38, 181-210.
Best wishes
Allan
