*/PhD Studentship ./*

We have the following funded studentship available which will cover a
student stipend at UK Research Council levels plus UK/EU resident fees*.

/'Breaking down the boundaries? : Exploring the working practices of
health and social welfare professionals in collaborating to deliver
social care services for the older client'/*/
/*
The research context of this proposed sociological study is the
implementation of the single assessment process and the promotion of
inter professional working between health and social care professionals
to plan and provide care services for older clients in the community; a
requirement of the Older People's National Service Framework.

The focus of the study will be the extent to which the boundaries that
have traditionally existed between the case-based model of service
delivery drawn upon by social welfare professionals and the clinical
orientation of the health professions have altered as a consequence of
policy drive towards greater collaboration between social and health
care provider organisations in care delivery for the older client. It
will also have a particular focus on the ways in which the increasing
joint use of electronic records,
particularly in the single assessment process, for clients by all groups
of health and social care professionals in primary care influences inter
professional working. The analytical focus of this study of
interprofessional team working is pitched at the micro level of local
health and social professional interrelationships rather than a more
macro concern with organisational collaboration. The proposed research
method is therefore an ethnographic one, utilising case studies of two
localities.

Candidates who hold or expect to obtain a relevant 1st or 2:1 BSc or an
MSc degree are invited to return an application form plus two letters of
reference, to [log in to unmask]

Candidates should indicate which project they wish to be considered for,
and are encouraged to contact specific project supervisors to discuss
projects and potentially visit host departments. Interviews will take
place in late April/early May.

/Further information about SWAN/

The SouthWest London Academic Network has been formed as a result of
existing, highly successful collaborative activities between the joint
Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences (FHSC) between Kingston
University and St George's, university of London, plus joint
studentships and research collaborations between Royal Holloway and St
George's.

*St George's, University of London (SGUL)*, has a long history as a
leading London medical school. With an annual income of £65 million, it
has built a strong reputation for innovation and quality in medical
education. SGUL offers programmes in medicine, biomedicine, a foundation
degree for paramedics and (via a joint faculty with Kingston University
(KU)) courses in health related professions, such as midwifery, nursing,
physiotherapy, radiography and social work. It also runs a joint
programme with KU in pharmacy.

SGUL is co-located with St George's Hospital in south west London. It
has approximately 5,500 students, 7.5% of whom are from overseas. This
total splits as: 3,700 health profession undergraduates in the joint
faculty (with KU), 1,300 medicine and bioscience undergraduates, 300
taught post doctorates and 200 research students.

* Kingston University (KU)* is a modern institution with approximately
18,000 students based on four main teaching campuses in Kingston upon
Thames, Surrey. KU has an annual income of £110m, and is currently
engaged in a major strategic project (the New University Project) to
re-engineer the academic, administrative and physical structures of the
university.

KU operates a joint faculty with SGUL (Faculty of Health and Social Care
Sciences) to deliver education in nursing, allied health professions and
social work. This is a joint venture arrangement of 10 years' standing,
managed through a shared governance structure reporting to both
institutions.

*Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL),* is a research-led college
with approximately 7,000 students spread across three faculties:
Science, Arts and History & Social Sciences. Nearly 20% of students are
postgraduates and a similar proportion are from overseas. RHUL is
situated on a large parkland campus in Egham, Surrey, based around the
historic Founders Building. It has an annual income of over £80 million.

In the 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), RHUL was placed in
the top 10 research institutions and all its science departments scored
5 or 5*.
