Yes, that's essentially what Brown says. Which makes the "neatly folded" translation a bit deficient. But then, the last time I looked, all of the English
translations are a bit deficient - some a larger bit than others. Course, considering the variables in the extant textual traditions, tricking out the original
meaning is something of an exercise in futility.

Well, obviously, and I've noticed that about Brown. His writings on John are fairly comprehensive although I would agree, his comments section is pretty
unabashedly an interpretation based on theology. I don't know any "biblical scholar" who doesn't do that.
For that matter, to some degree (as this thread is starting to reveal) few, if any scholars are able to free themselves from personal bias.
Which is why I tend to be like the medieval pilgrim mentioned in another post: *shrug* "Let (whatever power exists in the Cosmos) decide."
Its all entertainment anyway.
