medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Rosemary Hayes-Milligan and Andrew Milligan
> I also saw the BBC show....The claim was made that stains on the face cloth
match stains on the shroud if wrapped round a head shape together. Both have
type AB blood.
news to me (who has been quite interested in the Shroud, on and off, since his
old classical history prof at Vanderbilt, Robert Drews, published a damned
good book on the thing shortly before the Carbon 14 "proof" was done in the
'80s) that there has *ever* been a trace of "blood" (much less type AB) found
on the Turin Artifact.
>They also suggested that the shroud may be identified with a relic that was
described as being in Constantinople in the late twelfth century
that would be the "Mandylion," bought at a fire sale by the Imperator from
King Agbar of Edessa in the 9th(?) c. and taken to C., where it is mentioned
from time to time as being in the Blacharnae palace chapel, presumably taken
as loot to France after the 1204 debacle, perhaps by an ancestor of Godfrey de
Charny, in whose hands the present "of Turin" artifact appeared in the 14th
c.
presumably (if the C-14 evidence can be believed) with the paint still wet on
the thing.
>- the description is, apparently, newly discovered.
i would strongly doubt that.
but, hey, it's the ole BeeB, so it's *got* to be credible, doesn't it??
not like we were relying on The Innernets for the Truth....
