Full-time PhD Studentships
Goldsmiths Media Research Programme: Spaces, Connections, Control
Bursary of £14,600 per annum plus fees
We are offering two full-time, three-year studentships for MPhil/PhDs in
the Department of Media and Communications.
The studentships starting September 2008 are attached to two projects
within the Goldsmiths Media Research Programme: Spaces, Connections,
Control. This programme is led by Professor James Curran and funded by the
Leverhulme Trust. The five-year programme of research is designed to
illuminate how future changes in the technologies for communication will
impact both positively and negatively upon society in all its aspects.
Project 4: Europe in Motion: Charting Changing Media Spaces and Policy in
Europe
The applicant will explore some aspects of media and cultural
transformation in the context of enlarged Europe. Possible areas of
research include transnational migration practices and their implications
for media and cultural spaces in Europe; media policy in the context of
wider contemporary cultural policy developments in Europe; transnational
developments in Eastern European media; media and cosmopolitanism. A
principal objective of the project is to move beyond conventional media
policy agendas, and to open up new and innovative perspectives concerning
media and the new European space.
Project 5: Tracking the Moving Image, Mapping the Screen
This PhD candidate, based in the Screen School of the Department of Media
and Communications, will develop a project that examines the changing
location and use of screen-based media and arts under current conditions
of globalization and technological convergence. The PhD may combine theory
and practice and include the production of screen-based texts. The
candidate should have an appropriate academic background, and, if
applicable, the practical skills needed to execute any practical component.
