Due to popular demand we are now running this course twice in 2008:

Introduction to Project Management

Additional date: Tuesday 29 April 2008, Oxford

Tutor: Jim Russell <http://www.alpsp.org/ngen_public/article.asp?aid=1260> ,
Project Management Consultant

Overview: We live in a world where both the publication process and the
overall publishing environment are affected by constant change. Project
management techniques are being used increasingly by publishers in order to
handle change effectively. For example, moving a journal (or group of
journals) from one typesetter to another, or planning a marketing campaign
with complex time-critical interdependencies are examples that will be
familiar to those working in publishing. In both cases, project management
techniques can be employed to ensure a successful outcome. This course is
not about large-scale, corporate projects, such as rebuilding Wembley
Stadium. It is about using the lessons learned from projects of this nature
and applying them in a publishing context. The course will demonstrate,
through the use of case studies, how to apply effective project management
techniques within publishing. The course will also explore some of the
personal and cultural factors that influence effective management of change.

Programme:

- Project management applied to publishing

- The principles of project management

- Project management methodology

- The life of a project

- Project management roles

- Avoiding project failure

- Measuring success

Learning objectives: By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
Appreciate the benefits of a project management approach when introducing
change; understand the principles, tools and techniques of project
management; be able to apply the skills learned through practical exercises;
be aware of the importance of personal and cultural factors in effective
management of change.

Who should attend: The course will help first line managers and others
responsible for handling change in any area within an organization. It will
also be suitable for those who are involved in projects as team members, for
whom a understanding of the processes involved will increase the
effectiveness of their input.
