As Denis Cosgrove was a Briton and taught at our universities, I thought
it of value to forward this sad news (from another Brit) to this list.

Subject: [MapHist] Denis Cosgrove
Dear All:
As some maphist subscribers are probably already aware, Denis Cosgrove
died last Friday, March 21st, after a very long battle with cancer. He
was at home in Los Angeles with his family.
Denis was a leading cultural geographer with wide interests in art and
landscape, who came to write extensively on the history of cartography,
and especially the history of images of the world. His many map-related
publications include *Apollo's Eye: A Cartographic Genealogy of the
Earth in the Western Imagination* (Johns Hopkins, 2001), an edited
volume, *Mappings* (Reaktion Books, 1999), and the chapter on
cosmographical imagery in *Cartography in the European Renaissance*, ed.
David Woodward, Volume 3 of *The History of Cartography*.
The Department of Geography at UCLA has a memorial site, where private
messages can be left: http://www.geog.ucla.edu/cosgrove.php.
I hope that those of you who knew Denis, or who were familiar with his
work, will pass on your thoughts to his family.
Best,
Matthew H. Edney
