All welcome. You are invited to join us for this ILIG Informal when Karen Poole, from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and the winner of the English-Speaking Union (ESU) and CILIP 2007 Travelling Librarian Award will be interviewed on her experiences.

Karen spent two weeks in October 2007 visiting a number of health/pharmacy libraries and information centres in Washington D.C., Boston and Memphis, and says: "My trip was a fantastic opportunity that allowed me to discuss health and pharmacy information and pharmacy education in the US as well as discovering more about electronic resources and training offered by librarians to pharmacists and pharmacy students. Everyone I visited was extremely hospitable; not only making my visits very informative but also showing me around their cities. Highlights included a visit to the American Pharmacists Association; a day at the National Library of Medicine and visits to several academic institutions including the University of Tennessee Health Science Center library and Drug Information Center."

Each year, the English-Speaking Union (ESU) and CILIP invite applications for the Travelling Librarian Award, from qualified librarians working in UK libraries or information centres who are members of CILIP (the deadline for 2008 applications is on 25th April.)

The Award is an opportunity to do a two-week study tour in the United States. It is intended to encourage US/UK contacts in the library world and the establishment of permanent links.

The Travelling Librarian Award - around £3000 - covers flights and some accommodation in the US.

The successful candidate is free to put together their own programme of visits (although help and advice is available) and, where possible, is encouraged to take up home hospitality with ESU Members.

Jill Martin, CILIP's Director of Knowledge and Information and Gill Hale, the ESU librarian, will be happy to answer any further questions about the Award. Jill says: "Past winners of this award have often found that it has enhanced their professional development and helped their career progression as well as being a rewarding personal experience. It is noticeable that several have gone on to become leading members of the profession".

ILIG Informals are not lectures; they are informal, but informative, early evening meetings with a short talk on a theme of international interest plus plenty of time for questions and networking. They are open to all and absolutely free. Light refreshments are served which is why we ask you to let us know you are coming by contacting Doug Knock at mailto:[log in to unmask] by 7th April. We look forward to seeing you.
