The Open University is looking for some public libraries and UK Online
Centres for a pilot to suppport a project called "Bridging the Digital
Divide". The aim of the project is to ensure that students from low
socio-economic groups are able to use local ICT facilities to benefit
fully from the University's use of e-learning and online communication
as part of the student learning experience.
We are looking for at least 4 libraries and at least 4 Uk Online centres
in which we can pilot this activity. The benefits for pilots centres
might be:
* increasing user numbers
* attracting new potential users of other services in the centres
* increasing the diversity of centres users in terms of education
levels and skills
* providing evidence of progression routes for centre users
* partnership with the OU
Pilot projects should be located within suitable widening participation
areas and will be expected to provide ICT access and basic support to
Level 1 OU students within their locality. We wish to set these up as
soon as possible and to run through till the end of December 2008.
We are looking for a wide range of venues in different locations across
the UK, in city centres, local neighbourhoods in areas of deprivation
and in rural areas. Please note that we do not anticipate paying
centres to participate, although there may be some flexibility to pay
for actual costs incurred.
We will be reviewing the responses before Easter, so an early response
or expression of interest would be welcome.
I hope you will welcome this opportunity and am certain that we will
learn much from the pilot activity.
