AVONMOUTH-SEVERN BEACH LITTORAL - performativities of emptiness
17 March 2008
11am-4.30pm
Wickham Theatre
University of Bristol
Cantocks Close

BACKGROUND
*Living in a material world* is an AHRC-funded Landscape and Environment
Network that forms part of the University of Bristol's Performativity,
Place, Space research theme (Angela Piccini and Jo Carruthers,
investigators): <http://humanitieslab.stanford.edu/materialworld/11>.
The network brings together University of Aberystwyth, University of West
of England and University of Bristol. We collaborate via a series of
interdisciplinary, site-based working weekends, a Stanford-hosted online
environment and symposia. The project runs between October 2006 and July
2008.
On 25-27 January we ran our final working weekend, along the littoral strip
between Avonmouth and Severn Beach
<http://humanitieslab.stanford.edu/materialworld/59>. Artists,
archaeologists, geographers, literary critics, performers, filmmakers and
historians participated. The University of West of England, organisers of
the weekend, asked each of the working groups to pick up to three topics
from the list below with a view to making a contribution to either:
1. The Observer Book of the Overlooked.
2. An alternative (local) version of the Shipping Forecast.
Topics:
The Littoral (earth/water); Non-human activity; Hiding places; (Effects of)
Weather; Litter; Waterways; Air; Paths.
SYMPOSIUM
The symposium brings participants together at the University of Bristol to
present material from the weekend, once again taking as a starting point
Walter Benjamin's observation that 'When someone goes on a trip (s)he has
something to tell about'.
Participants on the weekend will be joined by Ika Willis (Classics,
Bristol), who will act as discussant for the day.
