Anthropological Perspectives on Learning and Teaching: Legitimate
Peripheral Participation Revisited
The origins of Lave and Wenger's 'Situated Learning' (1991) go back to a
conference in 1988, so the idea of legitimate peripheral participation is 20
years old. It has had enormous influence in some areas, but is rarely a
core citation in Teaching and Teacher Education (TATE) journal papers. To
celebrate the 25th Birthday of Tate, by focusing on the journal's original
mission statement to be multi-disciplinary, the editors wish to have a
special issue focused around empirical work inspired by, or critical of,
Lave and Wenger's concept of LPP. Papers focused on learning and teaching
in non-school contexts, such as kitchens, riding schools, do jos, dental
surgeries or prisons would be particularly welcome. As Lave and Wenger
(1991: 39-40) said 'Issues of learning and schooling seemed to have become
too deeply interrelated in our culture'.
Papers, between 6,000 and 9,000 words, in Tate house style, should be
submitted electronically to [log in to unmask] by November 30th 2008.

should suggest two referees for their paper.
