BIRD Design Research Symposium: «Creating New Realities Today».
Basel, April 4th & 5th 2008
We would like to advise you of the BIRD Symposium on «Creating New
Realities Today», an international design research symposium, co-
organized by IDK (Institute for Research in Art and Design, Academy
of Art and Design, UAS Northwestern Switzerland), BIRD (the Board of
International Research in Design) and the publishing house
Birkhäuser. We are very much looking forward to a fascinating event,
which brings together international experts from the areas of design
research, various design disciplines, and related research areas,
including artificial intelligence, philosophy and art.
The BIRD Design Research Symposium explores how designers enact and
shape the realities as they are in the present, and how they create
and realize new realities and future possibilities.Designers work on
the contingency of the world as it is, and they explore the world as
it could be. It is this particular character of a design-specific way
of acting and knowing, which is at the core of this design research
symposium, taking place on April 4th and 5th 2008 in Basel. The
research focus of the BIRD Symposium is on describing, understanding
and explaining design as a way of creating new realities, on
exploring, discussing and comparing multiple approaches and
strategies of designers in this perspective, as well as on their
study in design research.
In particular, three themes are explored:
Part 1 (Friday, April 4th) on «Design Research and Meaning: Enacting
New Technologies», bringing together contributions from Klaus
Krippendorff (Annenberg School for Communication, University of
Pennsylvania, Philadelphia), Rolf Pfeifer (Artificial Intelligence
Lab, University of Zurich), Michel Zai (etoy corporation), followed
by a panel discussion moderated by Simon Grand (Institute for
Research on Art and Design, Academy of Art and Design, Basel);
Part 2 (Friday, April 4th) on «Design Research and Design Process:
Designerly Ways of Knowing», bringing together contributions from
Nigel Cross (Department of Design and Innovation, The Open
University, London),Christian Gänshirt (Berlin), Frédéric Dedelley
(Institute of Interior Design and Scenography, Academy of Art and
Design, Basel), followed by a panel discussion moderated by Wolfgang
Jonas (School of Arts and Design, University of Kassel);
Part 3 (Saturday, April 5th) on «Design Research in Context:
Perspectives for the 21st Century», bringing together contributions
fromRuedi Baur (Intégral Ruedi Baur et Associés, Paris and
Design2Context, Zurich University of the Arts), Jan Torpus (Institute
for Research on Art and Design, Academy of Art and Design, Basel),
followed by a panel discussion moderated by Michael Erlhoff (Köln
International School of Design).
