Stream description:
OR for Developing Countries & the Community
Over the last 50 years there has been an underlying spirit in OR to
tackle societal issues as well as business and industrial problems. The
UK OR society has been instrumental in ensuring that this outlook
remains strong.
Over the years it has supported two initiatives (among many others): -
community OR and OR for developing countries. Community OR works to
provide effective help to voluntary and community sector groups, which
are in many ways different from OR's more "traditional" clients. Examples
include
* a market research survey on behalf of a community centre
on a large housing estate;
* help with installing computers in a volunteer bureau;
* a systems study of the logistics of a large public event
organised by a pressure group.
In the same spirit, OR for Developing Countries focuses on the
particular problems faced by many developing countries and on OR
methodologies appropriate to resource-poor conditions. Clearly there is
a large overlap with the aims of Community OR. Examples of OR in
Developing Countries include:
* Humanitarian Relief Logistics
* Health Care Planning and Provision
* Provision of Clean Water
* HIV/Aids Prevention and Treatment
* Capacity Building for Development
* Sustainable Communities
* Land-use and Environmental Planning
* Appropriate Technology for OR in DCs
The stream welcomes talks on the application of operational research to
community or development issues.
