mum used to take the buttons of fold shirts and store them in her sewing
basket so that she had a range of sizes and shapes for matching the ones we lost
off our school shirts.
But of course - how else did children learn to count and make sets? Mum's
and Granny's button boxes were a much sought-after plaything!
