I always thought that the "Laidley Worm" was based loosely on the
"Lambton Worm", which strangely seems to have a factual basis.
The Votodani who lived in those areas had a penchant for Dragon
Brooches; their descendants, the Gododin, when they settled in North
Wales adopted the Reg Dragon as their emblem. It is not surprising then
that serpent, worm and dragon myths thrive in the North East.
