What was the battle of the books and why did the Institute lock away one
archive item from the public fearing it may cause revolution? To find out
this and much more join the Archivist and the Deputy Library Manager on a
tour round this refurbished grade II listed library. Learn about the
Librarys unique and fascinating history, and of its collections relating
to the history of London, the early labour movement, radicalism and co-
operation.
The Bishopsgate Library has numerous historical collections, which provide
a focal point for research into a variety of subject areas, including the
social and topographical history of London, particularly the East End, the
early labour movement, humanism, freethought and secularism and co-
operation.
The Archives of the Bishopsgate Library include organisational collections
such as those of The British Humanist Association, and The National Miners
Support Network. Personal papers such as those of Raphael Samuel and
Caroline Selena Ganley, and also The London Collection Manuscripts which
consist of collections and items relating to the social, cultural,
architectural and topographical history of London from the early nineteenth
century to the present day.
Bishopsgate Library's printed collections consist of over 60,000 books and
pamphlets, plus over 1,000 journal titles arranged into several
collections. In addition, the collections contain ephemeral material such
as leaflets, flyers, handbills and press cuttings.
