Training Fellow in Genetic Epidemiology
School of Medicine
Department of Health Sciences & Department of Genetics
Salary Grade 6 - £23,002 to £26,666 per annum
Available up to 31 December 2010
Ref: E3620
The successful applicant will have a degree level qualification and normally an MSc in a relevant discipline. Applications are especially welcome from candidates at a junior postdoctoral stage. Willingness to learn new approaches is essential, but previous experience of genetic epidemiology studies is not necessary.
The postholder will:
* Develop and maintain up-to-date knowledge of design, conduct and analysis of epidemiology and genetic epidemiology studies.
* Support research and, within agreed parameters and with appropriate supervision, undertake research in an environment that promotes advanced training in genetic epidemiology. This research will include the development of new statistical approaches of relevance, as well as contributions to large collaborative applied genetic epidemiology studies employing validated statistical approaches.
* Undertake teaching of epidemiology and genetic epidemiology using agreed delivery methods within an established teaching program.
The genetic epidemiology group undertakes applied research aimed at understanding environmental and genetic determinants of complex diseases, with a particular focus on cardiovascular diseases. The group is involved in a number of large epidemiological studies nationally and internationally. Current methodological projects focus on causal inference, mendelian randomization, impact of measurement error and relationship mis-specification, genome-wide association and copy number variation, modelling of treatment effects and circadian variation, utilising family data with McMC and graphical modelling approaches and adjusting for ascertainment bias.
The University of Leicester has internationally acknowledged strengths in genetics, genetic epidemiology and complex disease research, particularly in cardiovascular medicine. The post will provide an excellent opportunity for career development in a dynamic multidisciplinary team headed by Professor Paul Burton, with strong national and international collaborations.
