Call for papers for the symposium “ZOOARCHAEOLOGY OF THE MESOAMERICAN CIVILIZATIONS” which is planned to held at the First National Congress of Zooarchaeology of Argentinia that will take place from the 8th - 12th of September in the city of Malargüé, Argentinia.

Symposium organizers:
Christopher M. Götz, PhD. (Facultad de Ciencias Antropológicas, Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, México) and Raúl Valadez Azúa, PhD. (Instituto de Investigaciones Antropológicas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, México)

The symposium is planned to present and combine zooarchaeological information that has been obtained in the last years concerning the use of animals by prehispanic cultures of Mesoamerica, which includes but is not limited to Olmecs, Zapotecs, to the inhabitants of the ancient city of Teotihuacan, Mayas and Aztecs, but can also refer to cultural manifestations of the northern portion of Central America, if connected to the cultures mentioned previously.

There are multiple subjects that can potentially be considered for the symposium. We would like to include presentations containing
a)	the use of animals for food,
b)	the use of animals for rituals,
c)	economic aspects related to the use and consumption of animals,
d)	the breed and maintenance of livestock and domestic animals and
e)	the ecological impact related to Mesoamerican civilizations.

A wide array of different themes was selected to circumscribe the multiple utilization of animals by the Mesoamerican cultures. We intend furthermore to stimulate interesting discussions about the importance of animales in the context of the prehispanic Mesoamerican cultures.

The presentations can be written in Spanish or English.

Anyone interested in participating in this symposium, please send the title and abstract (max. 150 words) of the presentation together with the confirmation to the e-mail addresses mentioned below.

Proposals will be received until the 25TH of MARCH at the latest.
