Dear all,
With apologies for cross-posting to users on similar lists...
We are a Vista 3 site on ASP, upgrading to Vista 4 in the Summer.
One of our courses, due to go live for Vista 4, requires assignments to be
submitted anonymously and double blind marked.
Anonymous submission means that graders should not know the identity of the
students whose assignments they are marking.
Double blind marking involves:
- two graders, who cannot see each others marks (either numerical, or
alphanumeric with a matrix to calculate the average grade), until marking is
completed
- when the marking is completed, the graders are able to see each others
marks and the calculated average but cannot change their initial mark
- graders agree on a final mark which may differ from the average
- an intention mark is a banded grading system (fail, pass ,etc.) derived
from the final mark
- finally an external examiner can add a comment
There are further requirements for the collection of statistics on marking
patterns, and recording of dates and times of marking to calculate time
taken to mark the assignment.
Possible workarounds for anonymisation that have been identified include;
1) the student submitting a Word attachment; submissions are compiled by an
administrator and the Word documents extracted and forwarded to graders. For
this to work students must follow specific instructions in file format and
naming, and the administrator then has a lot of work to do sending out
documents to and gathering marks from graders.
In the case of double blind marking, again the administrator would have to
co-ordinate the process inputting marks into the grade book.
2) Using the Group Manager feature to automatically create a group for each
student - when submitted the assignments can be downloaded using the 'create
printable view'/'save to file' feature - the process is then similar to that
detailed above. This method would be unwieldy for large numbers of students.
If your institution has addressed either or both of these challenges, we
would be very keen to hear from you, especially if you are developing a
Powerlink for use with Blackboard (WebCT) Vista to deal with such issues.
With kind regards,
Ian Calder
