Hi Folks
Some of you might know we launched the Civil Society Almanac yesterday,
our now annual digest of stats on the range of entities that populate
civil society. Using the increasing amount of data available from
GuideStar UK, the Almanac is a resource that we hope researchers will
find particularly useful. A free summary is available at
http://www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/research/index.asp?id=7702. If you want to
see some of the raw data that underpins the Almanac, see
www.guidestar.org.uk
We've finally got round to expanding the breadth of coverage: its no
longer just charities, it now includes estimates for a range of entities
that are not charitable but nevertheless are in the known universe of
civil society associations. As such, this repesents the first iteration
of our work on operationalising definition and classification; we now
have a detailed operational map of data sources and organisational forms
that some may find useful.
A key finding for me is that we have had to rethink our conception of
charities as the main engine underpinning the economic contribution of
these entities: our redrawn map indicates that charities provide around
a third of the civil society organisations' collective turnover. Data on
coops, housing assns, universities, trade unions and political parties
present not only a fuller picture but also a greater sense that
different traditions actually have quite a bit in common. There are
other more interesting findings too that may be worth discussion, in
particular we have more detail on financial relations with the state
that pertain to arguments about independence and colonisation.
If you are interested in reviewing the published research findings drop
me a line. We also have to sell them...so if you think this is going to
be a useful addition to your university library please also drop me a
line. If you are interested in these stats for teaching purposes we can
provide powerpoint slides...particularly if your library purchases a
copy!
Cheers
Karl
