For once, I looked.
VHE = Voluntary Human Extinction.
Advocating stopping breeding, having no more babies, encouraging people
without babies to have no more, so that the human race can be phased out.
Not advocating voluntary suicide. The main argument is that it is immoral to
bring more children into the world when it is such a mess, it is like
renting rooms in a burning building.
Hmm. I can see their point, and my daughter (11) says that instead of having
babies she will adopt, because it doesn't seem right to her to have more
children when there are already children who need care and aren't getting it
-- and she says, why go through all the discomfort and risk of pregnancy
when you can adopt?
However, I once read a sci fi story about a world where people had stopped
breeding because they couldn't (for some sort of environmental or
post-holocaust reason) and it was a very depressing world indeed because
everyone was old. If everyone really did stop breeding this would happen,
and at some point there would be no younger people left to care for the old
and incapable, who would die miserable deaths... voluntary suicide and
euthanasia would then perhaps become popular.
I saw a documentary not long ago about some terrible long-term refugee camps
somewhere in Asia where people were living literally in filth, were
suicidally miserable, had been there for years... and were nevertheless
having babies! It sometimes seems that the worse their living conditions,
the more babies humans seem to have. Perhaps because fucking becomes one of
the few pleasurable activities left.
