CALL FOR PARTICIPATION - ParticipART

ParticipART at the PARTICIPATORY DESIGN CONFERENCE 2008

30 September - 4 October, 2008

Bloomington, Indiana USA

http://www.pdc2008.org <http://www.pdc2008.org/>

: : Background : :

ParticipART is an exhibition and discussion platform on participative
installations, performances and prototyping, aiming at creating an
inspiring space for discussion that can enliven and enrich the dialogue
between participatory design and the creative practices. The exhibition
is the Art Track of the PARTICIPATORY DESIGN CONFERENCE 2008,
"Experience and Challenges", which will take place in at Indiana
University (Bloomington, IN - USA) on 30 September - 4 October, 2008.

A central tenet of Participatory Design is the direct involvement of
people in the co-design of the things and the technologies they use.
Since 1990, the PARTICIPATORY DESIGN CONFERENCE (PDC) has been focusing
on the design and development of computing and information technologies
in diverse social contexts, with the active collaboration of people who
use or are affected by these systems.

Over the years, our design discussions have been enlivened and enriched
by the efforts of musicians, architects, computer graphic designers and
artists working across a wide range of disciplines. Artists presenting
their work at PDC 2008 will enjoy a rare opportunity to reach a
technically expert and socially engaged community of practitioners.
Artworks that were exhibited at ParticipART 2006 are available at:
http://www.participart.org/

ParticipART 2008 focuses on installations, events and performances where
the audience is actively and directly involved in the co-creation of a
final shared outcome.

: : Theme : :

The theme of PDC 2008 is "Experiences and Challenges" - for ParticipART
2008 we are seeking submissions that challenge the notion of
participation through art and challenge art through participation. We
are interested in creative practices that support new roles for
visitors/viewers as co-authors. Artists/designers working in the field
of visual, installation, and performative arts are invited to submit
projects that enable participation.

: : Submission Categories : :

Submissions to ParticipART 2008 are welcome in the following categories:

1. Participatory Installations

In this category the audience actively co-creates new artistic meaning
and art-e-facts over the course of the conference. These submissions
will typically include art pieces (any artifact, from fine art to high
tech installations) that actively prompt and enable co-creation of a
final art piece or part of thereof. Please note that interactive
installation where the user gets automated responses as a consequence of
their movement/action do not qualify as participatory: we are seeking
installations that evolve through the course of the conference thanks to
active audience participation and co-creation.

2. Participatory Performances

In this category the audience is invited to actively contribute to a
live performance. These submissions will typically include performances
(dance, music, theater...) that actively prompt and engage the audience.
Please note that interactive installation where the user gets automated
responses as a consequence of their movement/action do not qualify as
participatory: we are seeking installations that evolve through the
course of the conference thanks to active audience participation and
co-creation. We welcome submissions in any performing art.

3. Participatory Prototyping

In this category the audience is facilitated to collaboratively develop
concepts in the form of prototypes over the course of the conference.
These submissions will be typically proposed by a practitioner who would
like to engage students and conference attendees in a hands-on event
where participants will collaboratively brainstorm, develop and
prototype a concept to be presented at the end of the conference. Again,
we are looking for a prototype of an art effort that itself will be
collaborative.

: : Submission Guidelines : :

Those interested in participating should submit a proposal of 2 pages
with supplementary materials either on CD/DVD or with links to
appropriate web sites. Proposals will need to include any requirements
for exhibition or performance space.

Please send your proposal to: [log in to unmask]

: : Timelines : :

Deadline for submission of proposals is March 15th.

Artists will be informed of acceptance by June 30.

: : Reviewing process and publication : :

Project submissions will be reviewed and curated by an interdisciplinary
group of experts. For accepted works, a 2 page description will be
included in the

Proceedings of PDC 2008 published by ACM in the International Conference
series. In addition to the hardcopy form, papers will also be published
via the web in ACM's Digital Library.

: : Funding : :

Transportation of works and materials to the site is at the expense of
the artist.
