manage my journals, inc. risk management & pricing policy', Nina Coutin, IOP
Publishing
'This was one of the most useful courses I have attended in a while. It
condensed a lot of material in a very concise & clear way'. Nicola Gulley,
IOP Publishing
'Very useful discussions with other group members re future strategies in
new business models', John Misselbrook, Portland Press
Overview: The aim of this course is to introduce finance and accounting
problems that managers face at senior level, and to enable them to feel at
ease working with finance and accounting experts. By the end of the course
delegates will have a grasp of the fundamentals of strategic finance in
relation to a journals business and know how to tackle some of the main
financial problems they are likely to encounter.
Programme:
Portfolio risk management: including topics such as attitude to risk,
balancing society versus proprietary and new versus mature journals,
currency exposure
* Decision making: including project appraisal, net present value,
investment decisions, product & company valuation
* Understanding the competitive environment: including Porter's Five
Forces, pricing policy, strategic issues
* Electronic business models: including print versus electronic,
e-only, pay-per-view, licensing
Who should attend: This course is aimed at experienced journal publishing
managers, publishing editors and publishers responsible for developing
financial growth strategies for their portfolio. Additionally, financial
controllers supporting journals and responsible for management accounting
will benefit. Ideally, delegates will have had direct experience of some or
all of the following: society journal acquisition; proprietary
journal/portfolio purchasing; journal/portfolio sale; long-term budget
setting; contract negotiation & agreement; establishing joint ventures;
presenting business strategies at managing director or board level.
